About Errol
Yes, this is a site completely dedicated to the promotion of myself. I plan to promote myself in an unabashed and unapologetic manner, and I’m pleased that you’re enjoying it!
Currently, I’m embarking on an adventure that begs documentation (for me, for introspection). By the end of 2007, I will circumnavigate the world twice. This endeavor will take place over plane, train, various types of foot-based and mechanized land based transport.
The adventure actually begins in late August, on Sunday August 27th, I depart to San Francisco, where I leave for the desert to enjoy the crazy hippy/rave/performance art festival known as Burning Man. This will likely be the last time the “boys” will be reunited for some time to come. Jason, Dale, and Raj have all confirmed their attendance. We even have our tickets booked. Everyone I know who has gone has basically said ‘Look I know this sounds trite and cliché, but it really is a life changing experience’. Returning home on September 6th.
On September 20th, We (Jason and I) depart to Vancouver, where I will see some friends, and have an opportunity to dip my foot into the ocean from Canadian soil for the last time in a year.
We will depart to Singapore On September 21st, hang out for a few days. From Singapore I will land in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam on September 24th.
The only deliverable we have for south east Asia to participate in “Interhash” in Thailand. The international meet for the running club Jason and I run with in Edmonton “The Hash House Harriers” . One of the great things of about attending the Interhash is that it provides us with opportunities to meet runners from around the world. There are some pre and post run parties/excursions that are planned out to Burma/Myanmar and China. [I’m less eager to go to Myanmar given the boycott that has been requested by Nobel Prize laureate and democratically elected leader in exile, Aung San Suu Kyi. Although the thought of seeing a country few Westerners see, through local runners, is tempting.] Doing the crazy running with the Hash House Harriers around the Great Wall of China sounds amazing.
I envision that Thailand will be our home base and if there is any place in the region we will be calling “home” for awhile it would be Thailand. During our three months (September 24 to November 6) we will be hopefully covering much of South East Asia: Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. We may have excursions to China, Indonesia and Philippines. There is a lot to see around that area but we’re going to try to keep it on the cheap.
Eventually, we depart to Calcutta (India) on November 6 from Bangkok (Thailand) where we will cross the sub-continent deliverabes include, the Taj Mahal, yoga, religious pligrimages, with an expected New Years in Goa, we will head up to Mumbai aka Bombay where we will depart to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), from there we will climb Kilimanjaro trek to the Ngorongoro Crater and make it to the coast so that I can do some Scuba diving.
We have a little bit of time to kill, we will be flying out of Maputo Mozambique on March 2nd. However, I anticipate a series of adventures as we traverse this portion of the dark continent, and I know this sounds absurd with the number of things we are doing but, I am really excited about the prospect of touching a whale shark.
From Maputo we go to Dubai, I expect that these three days will be among the most expensive of the trip. I expect that wallet hemorrhaging days will be well worth the money. Dubai looks like a country that is analogous to Disney land the difference, that makes the difference is that it’s for adults. Dubai actually has a “Shopping festival!”. I’m hoping that all the “Starwood” points I have accumulated over time can be used to decrease the price of our accommodations. Who knows? I can’t wait!
Finally, on March 5th, we land in Cairo. Where I will follow the standard tourist fare to discover the mysteries of Ancient Egypt, given my inate ability to initiate things, I expect I will be able uncover some adventures. For those of you that know me well, I have always been fascinated with this portion of history. I look forward to learning more.
At this point, I have already taken my last plane ride (into Cairo from Dubai), after we have met our ambitions for Egypt, I expect to grab a ferry (with more rust than iron and not enough life boats to keep one 10th of the passengers alive). Over to Turkey, where I will explore Troy and the ancient cites of the ancient world, and perhaps catch some beach time!
From there up to Moldova, where I plan on touring the vineyards, learning the fundamentals of survival in Eastern Europe and probably buying some new clothes (Africa and India will garner a different dress code). Eventually, I need to make it home for my sisters wedding. So, back to Canada for a few days, and then back out to eastern Europe to reunite with Jason and finish off our final trek. Which will take me from Eastern Europe, to Moscow, and Moscow to Beijing.
September 2007 - Home in Canada. Presumably.
